What French Certificate Do You Need to Study or Work in France?

Updated: Sep 10

If you're planning to study, work, or live in France, proving your French level may be an important step. Fortunately, several internationally recognised certificates can help you achieve your goals.

Here's a simple guide to help you choose the right one.

DELF – The Most Popular French Diploma

The DELF (Diplôme d'Études en Langue Française) is the most widely recognised French language diploma.

It is available at four levels:

  • A1 – Beginner

  • A2 – Elementary

  • B1 – Intermediate

  • B2 – Upper Intermediate

Good to know: Once you pass the DELF, it is valid for life.

DALF – Advanced French

The DALF (Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française) is designed for advanced learners.

It includes:

  • C1 – Advanced

  • C2 – Proficient

These diplomas are recognised by universities, employers, and institutions around the world.

TCF – French Language Test

The TCF (Test de Connaissance du Français) is different from the DELF and DALF.

It evaluates your French level from A1 to C2 but does not award a diploma.

Your results are valid for 2 years.

The TCF is often required for:

  • University applications

  • Immigration procedures

  • Visa applications

  • French nationality applications

Which Level Do You Need?

To study in France

Most universities require:

  • B2 for Bachelor's degrees

  • B2 or C1 for Master's programmes, depending on the course

To work in France

The required level depends on your profession, but generally:

  • B1–B2 for many jobs

  • B2–C1 for professional careers requiring regular communication

  • C1 or higher for teaching, healthcare, law, journalism, and other specialised professions

DELF or TCF?

Choose the DELF if you want a diploma that lasts a lifetime and strengthens your CV.

Choose the TCF if you need to prove your French level for a university application, visa, or administrative procedure.
